Defining Academic Writing: Due 10/5/09

Now that you have completed the first draft of your first paper at CCNY (at least in FIQWS), devise a working definition for academic writing.

This statement should be no more than a paragraph long, and should include:

1. Your concept of how writing is used to learn and/or perform other tasks in the college setting.

2. An acknowledgment of your position in the world of academic writing:  what do you stand to gain from writing papers in college, and what does the college stand to gain from you?

Reminder:  We will meet in the library on 10/5 at 5pm.  Please arrive on time to room 1/340.

  1. My definition for Academic writing is being able to use words in a specific manner to show your own emotions in your writing on what ever you learned in class. I feel that writing in a college setting is mainly used to prove that you actually understand what you've been taught at one point in a course. By writing papers in college not only will I be able to learn more about topics that interest me that i've never known about, but also i will gain the experience of using better ways to express myself through writing. College will gain from me what they would gain from any student, fresh new and unique ideas from people observing their surroundings and the world.

  2. Academic writing is writing in a way that is not only formal (proper grammar and structure), but creative and original as well. In a college setting, everyone is expected to speak eloquently. Academic writing is a good way to adapt to the English language, allowing a person to practice articulation in a non-verbal manner. The more articulate a person is in his or her writing, the more intelligent and respectable he or she will come across in social situations in school; whether it’d be presenting a speech, social networking, or just trying making new friends. I hope to gain much better writing skills than before from writing college papers. I feel like my writing is not up to par and I hope to reach my full potential soon. I’m not completely sure what college will gain from me. Hopefully, like Alain said, college will gain fresh, new, and unique ideas from me, as should any other student.

  3. Academic writing is intelligent, informed writing. A person's writing shows how far they have come from the time they learned to write their names. Through out their academic lives, they meet dozens of different teachers and peers who have influenced them so that they end up with a form of writing that is their own, yet a combination of them all. In college, a person has already formed this style, but they are not set in stone yet, since it is the time for students to experience more and learn from people they would not have met before. Therefore, a college setting remains as a place for us to continue learning (and teaching) from one another. It is important to practice writing like it is done in college because it is a true reflection of a person's character.

  4. Academic writing should be used with above par, professional language to show the range of language with correct grammar and sentence structure. It can show emotion as well as opinion to the subject matter but it must always be supported by evidence. Writing papers in college will help me speak in a more informal, professional way which can be useful in the future workplace. Another gain one can receive from academic writing in college is the ability to improve and perform at the highest level. New, fresh ideas can be accounted for and true feelings can be expressed through academic writing in college.

  6. Academic writing is skillfully crafted and insightful. It is well structured and flows smoothly while being informative. It should accurately and articulately present one’s thoughts and ideas. One’s success in college writing is measured by how competent they come off through their work. They should be able to make a claim and support it with strong backing evidence. Academic writing focuses on more than just describing facts, it requires one to write about a subject on a more profound level and provide an insightful interpretation of a given subject. Through writing in college, I hope to improve on all of these skills, particularly the ability to communicate my thoughts and provide my readers with insight through my work in a more eloquent manner.

  7. My definition of academic writing is presenting your point of view on a matter using critical thinking and research. A college paper should be well researched and thoroughly written. Writing in a college setting is used to teach the students something new with supportive evidence. The student should see things from different vantage points and be able to bring those ideas and POVs through their paper. I stand to learn better writing techniques and how to better develop and structure my paper. With A college filled with people from different areas and backgrounds such as CCNY, the college will receive a plethora of different ideas and will have a better understanding of where all these students are coming from.

  8. Academic writing is the ability to write about what you know on a certain topic in a way that it makes sense. Writing teaches the students that there is always more than one argument to every story. Writing also pushes students to think and makes them come up with their own arguements that are backed up with concrete or close to concrete evidence. I will hopefully be able to write consistantly, and organize my ideas in a way that they make sense. If this accomplished then CCNY will see that the money spent on the writing class wasn't a waste.

  9. After completing my first college essay I feel that academic writing, has to deal with a much higher level of thinking when you are writing a paper. A lot more time and effort has to go into what you are writing, and you really need to organize your ideas, and thoughts to prove a case. Academic writing goes beyond the first draft and can only can get better the more you write, fix, and research your topic. The way writing is used to learn and perform other tasks is by letting us be able to learn in a different way. Its more like we take what we learn in class, and on our own we expand on what we learned through reading and writing papers. Which can be said the same for other tasks that we have to take on in college. The more I learn about a specific topic the more ill be interested in writing on the topic to better understand what imp learning. Academic writing has to do with your knowledge, and the way you feel towards a topic, your opinions and your facts all help to show what a great writer you are. The way that the school can stand to gain from me is letting me take in enough from the school, so that I can move on from being an academic writer to a scholarly writing, and take my expertise and writing to the next level.

  10. In the college atmosphere of City College, I have learned how to convey my thoughts better than I ever have before in both elementary and high school. I have began to write more concisely not wasting any sentences to filler information (useless info). Hopefully as I become a better writer I can us my skills to assist others in portraying their train of thought. This will allow for everyone with an idea or plan to have someone with slightly better writing and organizational skills to illustrate their stance on certain topics. But, for now I am stuck with learning the basics and hopefully my skill will mature into an unstoppable force.

  11. 1. Academic writing is used to learn because by having to write papers for college one can better apply themselves to their work concentrating and putting thought into the message they are trying to convey in the essay.

    2. What i stand to gain from writing papers in college is a a new way to search and apply the information i found to write the paper or perform a task later on. The college stand to gain from me is a new person that can help shape the future in a better way with the ideas and knowledge that i gained from my time attending there.

  12. 1. In the college setting, writing is used as a form of academic communication rather than an art form. Writing is used to communicate your academic findings to your peers, and for you to better understand their findings by. The writing is concise, and informative. Academic writing has a particular style, and usually sounds fairly objective and scientific.

    2. My place in the world of academic writing is currently simply an amateur student. I stand to learn tons from the writing of scholars at the edge of their fields. I can absorb both their findings, and the style of their writing by studying scholarly writing. Soon, my place in the system will change. I will become an academic writer, and then others will stand to learn from my ideas and findings. Then, the cycle will repeat itself.

  13. Define Academic Writing

Academic writing is writing to refine a specific topic. It is writing and rewriting to include a complete work. Academic writing must include a thesis which includes a claim. Reasons for this claim, several evidences to back up the claim and lastly a conclusion stating what is claimed is clearly proven and what suggestions can be offered to improve and or removed to make the claim offered a better outlook on the topic.
In a college setting the writing is more sophisticated, the sentence structure , vocabulary, resources used, writing style are all put together differently from grade school writing. Throughout college you have to write several papers for your classes and you must know how to present your topic and arguments in a more knowledgeable context.

My position in the world of academic writing is to be a better, sophisticated writer. I expect my vocabulary to improve tremendously, to have a writing style that is fluid and not be afraid to tackle a topic with the amount of pain I am currently in. I want when I sit down to write I can already foresee all the parts necessary to have in the complete work [thesis, reasons, evidences and conclusion]. My writing should be comprehensible, and can be enjoyed by anyone reading it. In my future jobs, I expect whatever I’m writing people will take notice of my skills and appreciated it, and would even be tempted to ask me where did I attend school.

  14. Academic writing is like running a triathlon after spending months in training. It is where all of our discussions and other assignments combine into a standardized form, and allows us to explore and develop topics on our own with minimal assistance from the professors and other students in comparison with other assignments. This makes it possible for us to learn to apply critical thinking skills and independent evidence gathering: and develop it into our own factual ideas on a subject. While it is true that these articles will be of lesser quality as we learn to flex the academic writing 'muscle', they still provide the community with another viewpoint in various ongoing topics. These results can then be debated, used, or debunked by other scholars examining the same topic in much the same way that we do in our own examinations of scholarly articles.

  15. Writing is a form of how you can argue and present yourself with thought. On the spot someone sometimes cannot rephrase all they are trying to interpret but when it comes to putting it down on paper we can express the voice within more efficiently.Writing also allows us to exercise our form of persuasion , on how we can use words in order to inflict another's opinion to agree with ours. it also helps us to widen our thought process , because when you write a paper it's your focal point and all these ideas spur out into the paper and gives us a better understanding and comprehension to the topic.I stand to gain a communication with writing and how to broaden an audience into my train of thought. My position in academic writing is my interpretation of the would through my mind , and my position is to be that other voice among many to state my ideas and tie them into the world around us.

  16. Academic writing for me is based on analysis, the process of breaking down ideas, to increase one's understanding. It uses deductive reasoning, and third person point-of-view. This can also help you develop your ideas, and establish, claim, reason, and evidence facilitating the way we write. Our thoughts can also be developed and our points proved. Writing in college is use to show the level of skills you have gained from high school through all your life. Is a way of asserting that u are yet in a college level in which you as a college student are able to identify the different elements in writing. From college writing I am trying to gain new, fresh and unique styles that can help me through out what’s left of college, and my career, as well, to help me I identify the different ways and styles that can be use to write, such as to give different accent or a unique vibe into a writing . From college writing I am trying to leave behind, Ideas, and forms of styles that may benefit other writers in the future, ways of developing and organizing ideas as well.
